Interview with the ex-head of Puma: “You need a lot of changes”

Mr. Seitz, you were an executive at Puma for 18 years and now run the motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson. A career as an art collector is not obvious. How did this happen?

For me it started early, I was already interested in ancient art at school, studied Latin and Greek. My parents also often took me to the museum, but these were more classical exhibitions. When I first visited Africa in 1989, it quickly became clear to me that the continent would never let me go. It dawned on me quite early on that there was actually no major museum in Africa dedicated to contemporary African art on a large scale. Then I thought: this has to change.
