IThere was a widespread disruption to card payments in Germany on Thursday morning. Customers of many banks, including Sparkasse, Commerzbank and Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken, have reported problems with cashless payments.
Users report on social networks that they were unable to pay with their cards at supermarket chains such as Lidl, Edeka or Rewe. However, gas stations and small shops such as bakeries were also affected.
Reducing the number of incident reports
It is still unclear exactly how many card providers, merchants and banks were affected. A decrease in the number of error messages indicates that the problem has already been resolved. Unlike the last massive power outage in 2022, the outage does not appear to have been caused by the readers. An insider told FAZ: “It appears to be an issue with background service providers because Lidl, Edeka and Rewe have different service providers,” said an industry expert from a major bank.
When asked by FAZ, representatives of supermarket chains have not yet commented on the incidents. The Savings Banks and the Giro Association said they are aware of the problem, but cannot yet say anything about its background.
