Racism against Naomi Campbell: “It’s hard to be a black woman who spoke her mind”

MAt 20 years old, Naomi Campbell has achieved almost everything that a model could achieve. She was seen on the catwalks in Milan, Paris and New York, commissioned for photo series in all the important fashion magazines, and was also photographed by Peter Lindbergh for the cover of British Vogue along with Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Tatiana. Patitz’s image looks like the kind of painting that immediately ushered in the era of the supermodel.

But for the black model, it was as if she was allowed to attend the party, but everyone else got big pieces of the cake. Because of her skin color, she was treated like a second-class supermodel. The documentary Supermodels, which will air on Apple TV+ from Wednesday, reveals just how much she suffered from hidden racism.
