France will suffer controlled blackouts this winter to avoid a runaway one: Macron calls for “not to panic”

With an energy crisis in Europe and half of the nuclear park in France stoppedin the country all the alarms go off: “Normally, our electricity production adapts to the increase in demand, but this year it seems that production and demand will not be at the same level,” said Olivier Veran, spokesman for the French government.

72% of France’s electricity comes from nuclear power, but 26 of the 57 reactors in the country do not work. For this reason, The Government is committed to controlled blackouts, and details how they will be: they will occur in small territories, and the same person will not be able to suffer them twice. In addition, those affected must be informed three days before, and the cuts will be at rush hour (from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.). In this sense, it should be noted that they may affect up to six million people at a time.

Services as basic as trains or the subway will stop working; Y so will the traffic lights, which will make traffic difficult. Even schools will have to be closed during blackouts. Only police stations, fire stations and hospitals are exempt from these. There will be no Internet or cell phone coverage either, but emergency calls can be made to 112. Given this situation, Macron asked the public “not to panic.”

In this sense, Antonio Turiel, a CSIC researcher, indicates that “these planned blackouts will be common during the winter.” “In many countries, it will be practically inevitable,” he warns. For now, these blackouts are not expected to happen in Spain, but they are considered very likely in countries such as the United Kingdom or Finland.
