Widespread German disease: it’s the best way to manage diabetes

DThe term “diabetes mellitus”, translated from ancient Greek and Latin as “honey stream”, was introduced into the medical vocabulary in ancient times. Doctors are said to have diagnosed “diabetes” by simply allowing the patient’s urine to melt in the mouth: an overly sweet taste indicated that too much sugar was excreted in the urine. To this day, the term “diabetes” combines a number of disorders of sugar metabolism, which lead to a constant pathological increase in blood sugar levels.

The finding is often part of the metabolic syndrome, so it can occur in combination with other comorbidities, such as carbohydrate metabolism disorders, high blood fat, high blood pressure, or obesity. Medically, we distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a rarer form of diabetes. It usually occurs during childhood or adolescence, but it can also affect adults. Here, the antibodies torpedo the cells that produce the vital hormone insulin in our pancreas. He has the task of quickly selling sugar, which enters the bloodstream with food intake, to the cells of our body. If there is not enough insulin, this transport does not occur, the sugar continues to circulate in the bloodstream and creates a “honey-sweet” broth.
