DThe man had a malignant brain tumor, but his will to live was not broken. Although he was undergoing radiation therapy, he wanted to complete the Ironman triathlon in Frankfurt. A difficult balance even for the doctors who treated him. “I finally gave him the go-ahead,” recalls Sebastian Adeberg. His patient successfully completed the competition on Sunday and returned for treatment on Monday.
The cancer patient owed his success primarily to his mental and physical strength, but also partly to the fact that his radiation therapy had almost no side effects. Adeberg, director of the clinic for radiation oncology and radiotherapy at the University Hospital Giessen-Marburg, describes this case as an example of the impressive successes that can be achieved with so-called particle therapy.
