Mapuche conflict: young president fights Chile’s oldest problem

DViolence in southern Chile does not stop. On Monday, in the Araucania region, a rural school and several vehicles from a forestry company were damaged. A week earlier, a chapel burned down in the same area. The arson was carried out by a radical cell of the Mapuche indigenous people. There have been several dozen in recent months.

Especially in the Araucania region, which is considered the heart of the Mapuche, as well as in other areas in southern Chile, there has been a territorial conflict for decades between different Mapuche communities and forestry and agricultural companies. They work the land that the indigenous people consider original. Radical groups see the attacks as a legitimate means of pushing through their demands for the return of territories and greater autonomy.
