WAlthough the Chinese Internet is full of anti-Semitism, students are at least being given a positive image of Israel. A seventh grade geography textbook, for example, praises agricultural machinery, which is exported to many countries. “Israel has developed water-efficient agriculture and has made great strides in doing so.” The Chinese textbook shows Israel as a country on the map, while the Palestinian territories are highlighted in different colors than the existing states.
Israelis report that in China, as elsewhere, they are always held in high esteem for supposedly superior intelligence. Sometimes this is an overly positive image of Jewish values, philo-Semitism. In 2019, just before Covid, 200,000 Chinese tourists visited Israel, more than in any previous year. The number of direct flights has increased, business ties have become closer.
