Bundesliga 2: Heidenheim end Darmstadt streak with late goal

D1. Heidenheim have once again made the fight for promotion to the second Bundesliga really exciting. Team Baden-Württemberg won the main match against SV Darmstadt 98 1:0 (0:0) and reduced the gap to league leaders Darmstadt to three points. In addition, Heidenheim inflicted the first defeat on the Lilies since the start of the season and after 21 league games.

Darmstadt are now leading with 49 points ahead of Hamburg (48) and Heidenheim (46). Jan-Niklas Beste (89th minute) scored the decisive goal on Saturday night in front of 12,212 spectators at the Voith Arena. Heidenheim remains undefeated at home this season.

The guests started energetically and with great self-confidence. After an unsuccessful pass by Tim Siersleben, Philipp Tietz tested Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Muller with a shot from 20 meters. The hosts needed something to get into the game. After 15 minutes it was a match with great speed and intense duels. Patrick Maink (21st) had a chance to put his Heidenheimer ahead.

As a result, the hosts gained an advantage in midfield and pushed the leaders back to their own half. At this stage, Darmstadt only occasionally hit the net. Tietz’s kick (31st) was not counted due to offside. On the other hand, the defense of the guests was reliable, so there were almost no chances.

After the restart, both teams neutralized each other at first. The Ostwuerttembergers had their first really good chance. But Darmstadt goalkeeper Marcel Schuen brilliantly parried Jan Schöppner’s header (52nd). But shortly before the end, Beste achieved a well-deserved advantage for the hosts. Heidenheim’s Dzenis Burnic, who had already been booked, received a yellow-red card in hectic stoppage time.
