DThe German Football Association (DFB) appears to have decided on a candidate. According to Bild and Kicker, Julian Nagelsmann will become the new coach of the national football team. The DFB and Nagelsmann are likely to be negotiating a partnership until the home European Championship in 2024.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Rudi Völler held their first meeting with Nagelsmann on Tuesday, the German Football Association announced. Neuendorf explained: “We are having good discussions.”
Nagelsmann will succeed Hansi Flick, from whom the association split on September 10 due to a continued lack of success. DFB lost 4-1 to Japan the night before, their third game in a row. Nagelsmann was relieved of his duties in Munich last March during the international break. His current contract at Munich is to be terminated and he will join the German Football Association on a free transfer, reports continue.
Voller jumped up
In the 2–1 win against France on 12 September in Dortmund, sporting director Völler temporarily took over as team manager, along with Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner on the German bench during the short comeback. The 63-year-old called it a “one-off” task before the game and stressed the urgency of finding a coach for the national team. On October 9, the national team will fly to North America for two international matches against the United States and Mexico. Then comes the game against Austria at the end of the year. Since June 2022, the Alpine Republic has been coached by Ralf Rangnick, who actively supported Nagelsmann’s coaching career in Leipzig.
With Flick, the DFB selection has already failed in the preliminary round of the World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022; they have only managed one win in six games this year, a 2-0 win over Peru. Feller spoke of the “World Cup baggage” that Flick could not shake off.
In the immediate aftermath of the horrendous defeat to Japan, a number of names have been rumored, including the decision of almost eternal dream Jurgen Klopp, who has been linked with Liverpool. Nagelsmann has not yet found a new club. The question of money was open, since he was contractually bound to the record holders with a well-paid job. It was previously indicated that an agreement between the cash-strapped DFB and Bayern was possible.
