The Swedes show solidarity: a special gesture to Spanish football players

ZTogether with Sweden’s players, World Cup champions Spain expressed global solidarity in the fight against sexual violence. Before Friday night’s Nations League game in Gothenburg, the players posed for a team photo with their fists raised for the first time. The Spaniards then gathered on the halfway line with the Swedes behind a sign reading “#SeAcabó” in German: “Stop now.” At the bottom it was written in English: “Our struggle is a global struggle.”

According to Spanish media reports, posters like “With you, Jenny and La Roya” could also be seen in the stands. When the players entered the field to warm up, they were greeted with thunderous applause, Mundo Deportivo reported.

Negotiations at the training camp

The association’s then head, Luis Rubiales, kissed player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips at the medal ceremony after Spain won the World Cup final in Sydney on August 20. He claims that this was done by mutual consent. But Hermoso said she felt “the victim of an impulsive, sexist and inappropriate act to which I did not consent.”

The players demanded personnel and structural changes in the national association RFEF. They also called for an international boycott to highlight their demands. During negotiations at the training camp before the game with Sweden, a number of agreements were reached through the mediation of the government and trade unions.

Hermoso also filed a complaint against Rubiales, which allowed prosecutors to file a criminal case in State Court. Hermoso was not nominated to play in Sweden by new national team coach Montse Thome to “protect” her, the coach said. Hermoso disagreed with this argument: “Protect me? From what?”.
