Champions League quarter-finals: tough opponents for Bayern and BVB

DBayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund avoid perhaps their toughest opponents in the Champions League quarter-finals but still face daunting challenges. The Munich team will meet with the leader of the Premier League, FC Arsenal. BVB meets Atletico Madrid. This was the result of the draw at the headquarters of the European Football Union this Friday in Nyon. Thanks to the draw, a German final between the two Bundesliga teams in London is possible, as in 2013.

Record-breaking Real Madrid will take on reigning champions Manchester City under coach Pep Guardiola in a highly anticipated final. The quarter-finals conclude with Paris Saint-Germain versus Barcelona. In a possible semi-final, Bayern will face Real Madrid or Manchester City, Dortmund will face PSG or Barcelona.

The first quarter-final legs will take place on April 9 and 10, with the return legs scheduled for a week later. The semi-finals will take place from April 30 to May 8. The main goal of all eight remaining teams is the final at Wembley Stadium in London on June 1. “The path to Wembley is now clear. From now on, everything is possible,” said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.

The Munich team have lost in the quarter-finals in each of the last three years. In 2021, the final stop was against Paris Saint-Germain, with underdogs Villarreal prevailing a year later. Last year, eventual title winner Manchester City beat Munich. For the German record champions, the premier class is likely their last chance at the title before head coach Tuchel leaves at the end of the season. In the Bundesliga, Bayern are ten points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen and are eliminated at the start of the German Cup.

Borussia Dortmund are among the top eight teams in the Champions League for the first time since 2021. By progressing against PSV Eindhoven, the Westphalians at least temporarily got rid of the disappointment caused by a controversial season so far.

On the other hand, Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig unfortunately lost in the round of 16 to Real Madrid. For debutants 1. FC Union Berlin it was all over after the group stage.

Bayer Leverkusen will now face Freiburg winners West Ham United in the Europa League quarter-finals. If the winner of the Europa League’s predecessor tournament, the 1988 UEFA Cup, reaches the semi-finals, their opponent will be the winner of the Italian match between Milan and Roma. This was the result of the draw that took place on Friday in Nyon, Switzerland. The quarterfinals will take place on April 11 and 18. The other two quarter-finals will see Liverpool face Atalanta Bergamo and Lisbon’s Benfica take on Olympique Marseille.
