Klopp before the final push of the season: “Of course, this is real madness”

DThe tight title race in the English Premier League is exciting Jurgen Klopp. “There’s pressure on the pot now, but actually it’s the most positive pressure you can get,” the Liverpool manager told Sky. He hadn’t expected an “extraordinary season” from the Reds for a long time, but now here we are, fighting for the crown with two outstanding teams. And, of course, it’s really crazy.”

After 28 games, Liverpool are level on points with leaders Arsenal in second, followed by defending champions Manchester City one point behind. While Klopp and his side face Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday (3pm), the two opponents will have important points on the line in the live clash (Sunday, 5.30pm / both games on Sky).

Klopp: ‘I owe people more than they owe me’

“I really enjoy just being there. And it will not fail because of our ambitions. Of course now we want to go all the way, but we’ll see if we succeed,” Klopp said: “Maybe we’ll lose on Sunday and then it’ll be over.” Or partly. At this stage it’s important to let go of all the chatter outside”.

Klopp is also trying to ignore the praise from Liverpool fans during his farewell tour. “Of course, I notice it, but, fortunately, only in passing. But I do know that love is great. The same is true vice versa. “I owe people more than they owe me,” he said, “but right now I’m completely caught up in the season and don’t even think about my situation.”

The Classic between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga has special meaning for Klopp. “These are special match days. And after Schalke at one point said goodbye to the second division, it was almost like a derby,” said the former BVB coach about the upcoming duel between the two top teams: “It’s not a derby now, but that’s what what is German classics.”

This Saturday (18:30 live on FAZ for the Bundesliga and on Sky) he – “absolutely amazingly” – has his fingers crossed for the visitors Dortmund. With the Black and Yellows, he often irritated Bayern during his time in the Bundesliga and snatched them the league title in 2011 and 2012. “Then it was still like this: we beat Bayern, I mean four or five times in a row, which has never happened before, but there was never a case where we beat them, we defended them well and “We counter-attacked a lot.” well,” recalls Klopp.

Klopp (56) is leaving Liverpool in the summer after nine years, although he still has a contract until 2026. The former Dortmund and Mainz Bundesliga coach has become a Reds legend thanks to the 2020 league title, the club’s first in 30 years, and the 2019 Champions League triumph.
